Rick had a wonderful way of teaching that made class come to life for the kids. I can't imagine a teacher being allowed to bring his sword to school theses days but Mr Hatt did. The Mars Project was so much fun and so much work! A much loved teacher.

Our condolances to Thelma, Cindy and family. Also, to Frank, Brian and Bob, who were part of Rick's support team over the past few years as he faced increasing health challenges. Among our fond memories of Rick are the fine group meals he prepared and served in his home to his friends, his Thunderbird sailboat which he loaned to us one summer and his sharp Scrabble skills when we played with him while visiting the Hands. Mr. Hatt was a fantastic teacher that instilled such a strong sense of community and well being in his students that recent weddings, christenings and school reunions were spent discussing peppermint quizes, Marsville and the impact of reading the Odyssey and Shakespeare as an 11 year old. Such an amazing educator and I am so very sorry to hear of his passing.

I echo my friend Claire McCarroll's sentiments. Mr. Hatt was our favourite teacher of all time. He kept us constantly imagining and exploring. We discussed how to live on Mars and built our own spaceships and living quarters during the Marsville project. He read us Homer's The Illiad and captivated us with tales of Greek mythology. We'd proudly count our peppermints earned during the daily peppermint quizzes, and we'd run and jump our hearts out at the track and field events. So many years later (we're over 30 now) we still discuss our adventures from his class. My sincerest condolences to Mr. Hatt's family. He left a lasting impact in the lives of many, and he will be missed.

So sad to hear of Mr. Hatt's passing. I was lucky enough to be in his grade 6 class at Rothesay Park 20 years ago. And despite the sometimes gruff exterior, Mr. Hatt had an incredible passion for teaching and reaching out to his students. From Anamalia, to the Giver, he did more than just teach. He imparted knowledge, and because of that he remains to this day one of my favourite teachers. To Miss Hatt and the rest of the family, my sincerest condolences.

Sir Richard was my best friend in high school. Sadly we did not continue to stay in touch so I was shocked to learn well after his passing that he had ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth’. While many knew him as a teacher, I knew him as a gifted writer of poetry and prose and the kindest, most compassionate person, always much older than his years in wisdom and thought. He certainly loved his Mum and Dad and sister Cindy... he once had me paint her portrait as a gift to his parents and knowing while I was painting everything else was forgotten, he would bring cheese and bread and we would have our picnic in my dingy first apartment. Every time I smell Amphora pipe tobacco, I think of him. He will never be forgotten
