Van, You were always a kind soul and friend to me and remember you fondly from our time together in The Lion King. I always chuckle when I remember covering my radio mic, thinking I couldn't be heard chatting. As you nudged me one day and proceeded to the sound room and you showed me how it can ALL BE HEARD!!! "They're not cheap mics" you said! My condolences to your family. You will be missed. xx

Dearest Van, I'll miss you very much. From Miss Saigon (original and best),surviving Lion King (major therapy required) and through to Jersey Boys (well,I liked the show!), your presence was joyous. I can't believe that I never made it over to you and Bill in Canada, despite all my plans. What a lesson in the downside of procrastination this is. You were an amazing man and will he missed by so many. My heart goes out to Bill and all your family who are left to try and cope without you. Here's to meeting for a large glass of wine further up the path. Rest well my friend. All my love, Maria

Sending huge hugs and love to Bill. We met on 'Time the musical' and when the show closed I moved to a flat round the corner from them in the east end of London. We had some glorious times and many a song recorded for him. Van was always there if I needed an ear. Or just to chat and drink vast amounts of coffee. Thank you Van. Xxx

My dear friend, We have laughed together & we have cried together: mostly huge amounts of laughter. I will never forget you. Special, unique, & one of the kindest people I've ever met. You had such talent & integrity. You were compassionate. I always admired how you would push yourself to try new things, new skills & courses. You were always pushing yourself. You had an amazing way with people. They would open up & tell you anything. I'm so happy that we all got to spend some time together last year on your visit to the UK. My heart goes out to Bill & your family. We have lost a very special soul. Then I think of you , & in my minds eye I see this... your smile...that infectious smile, & that makes me smile, then your smile turns to laughter and that laugh I will never forget. My darling friend, I am so glad I got to tell you how special you were to me and that I love you.

Oh Bill, I am so sorry for your loss of Van... I guess I was among the last to see him as he & Ian held the door for me as I was leaving the b minor mass rehearsal that afternoon... little did I know that was the last time I would see him... He was, as all have mentioned, so gentle. I am struggling as to how I will be able to continue the b- mass gig without him as leader of our continuo section... I am still in shock... but Thank you for letting him back into our world of rural NB & its musicians.

I first met Van back in the 60s when we were teenagers, taking music lessons from the same teacher. In 1967 the two of us spent the summer at a music camp in Mount Orford, Quebec and that is where we got to know each other better - 2 English speaking Maritimers at a predominantly French camp. We went separate ways and it was only recently, after Van moved back here, that we reconnected and I found out what a lovely man he had become. He was kind and gentle, had a great smile and sense of humour, and gave his full attention to the person talking with him. And, of course, he was a fine cellist. I'll always remember those days we spent at Peggy Smith's house, playing through music while Peggy painted. Go in peace, dear Van, on the next phase of your journey.

Van was a truly wonderful man who enriched all our lives with his kindness, love, positivity and his heart of gold. He brightened everyone's day whether it be with just a smile,a hug or his adorable Canadian twang that never failed to make me smile during a daily sound check. When he and Bill moved back to Canada I would look forward to a phone call in the summer to say they were in London for a visit. Last summer we walked through London talking for hours,I never wanted the day to end. Like many others I am truly heart broken to lose someone so special whom I had the privilege to call a dear friend. My condolences, thoughts and love go to Bill and all Van's family. It is with a heavy heart that I say farewell beautiful Van and thank you for all the lovely memories that I will cherish and will always make me smile. xxx

The past few days have been dotted with memories of years past....of running and playing in the field and trees of your childhood Quispamsis home, of listening to Van play his cello at Stone church, of seeing Bill and Van singing in the pop up choir at Stone, of visiting the Kingston Peninsula home with Joan and touring the beautiful garden. I wish I could be there on Saturday to celebrate Van's life but know I am here praying for the whole family. I feel blessed to have grown up with you all. Joyce Lockett Millard
