Obituary of Wilfred Wallace Steeves
It is with sadness that the family announce the passing of Wilfred Steeves on December 17 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following a long battle with cancer, at the age of 77. Husband of the late Lola Steeves (Smith) for 54 years. Wilfred was born at the family farm at Steeves Settlement, the second child of Dawson and Bessie (McLeod) Steeves. He was predeceased by his wife Lola (2016), daughter Elaine (2012) and his parents.
Wilfred is survived by his daughter Gwen (Jeff) Chase; grandchildren: Curtis (Melissa) and Katelynn Chase, Ben (Shawnesty), Michael (Gillian), Jonathan (Dakota) Steeves; beloved sister, Joan MacKinley; his special friend, Lorna Roy; son-in-law, Brian Steeves (Marcheta); his buddies, Tom and Syd; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Wilfred was employed at Saint John Ship Building for 32 years. Following his retirement he enjoyed the job of visitation Pastor at Rothesay Baptist Church for 13 1/2 years. Wilfred was a member of True Life Church (formerly Rothesay Baptist Church) for over 50 years. During that time he served as a Deacon, a choir member, Christian Service Brigade leader, coordinator of the Seniors Club 60 group and he was the treasurer of the cemetery for 40 years. He was very active at the Steeves Settlement Baptist Church for several years. Wilfred also looked forward to and really enjoyed gatherings of family and friends at the homestead farm and any place that they were gathered.
He was a member of the Monarchist League of Canada. He met the Queen in 2002 in Sussex and received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012 for community service.
Wilfred had a good sense of humour, he enjoyed playing the organ/piano in various churches. He enjoyed his flower gardens that were used for several weddings.
