Rita was my Altar Boy instructor. I'm 42 years old so that tells you how much of an impression she had on me. I can still remember her trying to teach us about the proper stance an Altar Boy should have. To do this, she got into a baseball hitter's stance right there in the middle of the sacristy. Right then and there she had this little baseball fan's attention! Rita taught me so much about faithfulness to God and respect for the Church. She never realized that I watched her every move as a kid because I wanted the kind of mature faith that she had. I now work for a Catholic charity and am very involved in the Church. I just want her family to know how much I respect her and how much of an influence she was in my maturity as a man and as a Christian.

Some fond memories : Aunt Rita would occasionally take Bertie and I down to the Rothesay Commons for a special trip and of course since we were right near the church we would stop in for confession! Back then females had to cover their heads when they were in a church. Not to ignore tradition she would pull out a spare “doily” for Bertie to wear and pin a clean Kleenex on my head.
I remember when she got her driver’s licence she was so excited about the freedom it would give her and Grammie. In the summer she would take Grammie, Bertie & I for Sunday picnics at various old cemeteries.
I also remember when she bought her first pair of denim jeans (they were green). She made it clear they were just for gardening but she did have a big grin when she said it.
Aunt Rita was always kind and patient. She had a long life with many health issues but kept her faith strong. She will be missed but she is now in a better place.
Love you always
Julie Johnston (Duffley)

I got to know Rita when we attended family get-togethers at the home of Jane and John. She was a lovely lady with a delightful sense of humor. My sincere condolences go out to her friends and family.
