Obituary of Ronald Hannington MacQuarrie
It is with heartfelt sorrow that the family of Ronald Hannington MacQuarrie of Rothesay, NB, announce his passing on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Saint John Regional Hospital.
Born in Scotch Settlement, on March 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Henry and Katherine (Hannington) MacQuarrie. A loving and devoted father, grandfather, and brother.
He began his career with the New Brunswick Telephone Company Limited (NBTel) in 1945, beginning a long and illustrious career spanning 44 years during which he acquired his Chartered Accountant Designation and ultimately held the position of Comptroller.
Ron will always be remembered for his devotion to his sons, Andrew and John. In their childhood, he never missed the opportunity to be at the hockey rink, cheering for John at his latest game, or at the Saint John Flying Club, taking his co-pilot, Andrew, up for a ride.
Ron had a love affair with books and could often be found in front of the fireplace at the old homestead in Island View Heights with a book in one hand and a Drambuie in the other. He kept his family in constant awe of his thirst for knowledge right up into his later years - from teaching himself how to wire a basement, turning a dream of flight into reality and acquiring his pilot’s license in the 1960s, to brushing up on the fundamentals of quantum physics - his intellect truly knew no limits.
Ron’s longevity can be attributed to his healthy lifestyle which in his 70’s included a daily bike route, taking him from the West side of Saint John to New River Beach, and frequent jogging at the Canada Games Stadium. He remained active all his life and walked every day religiously, rain or shine. Health-conscious as he was, Ron couldn’t deny his sweet tooth. He loved his Oh Henry bars, regular trips to the Pumpkin Patch in the summer with the grandkids, and he never missed a sale on Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream - frequently stocking up to keep his freezer in a steady supply of his favourite flavour.
Besides his sons; Andrew MacQuarrie of Toronto, and John MacQuarrie of Rothesay, grandchildren; Megan MacQuarrie and Matthew MacQuarrie-Cottle, as well as several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Ron will also be greatly missed by his devoted cat Smokey.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, John, Ivan, and Earl; his sisters: Beulah, Mildred, Gladys, Eileen, Kay, and Thelma.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Jessica Dunfield for the wonderful care she provided. Our family is so very grateful for the kind and compassionate care he received in his final few weeks.
