Obituary of Joan Elizabeth Scribner

It is with broken hearts that the family of Joan E. Scribner, wife of Elmer Scribner, announces her peaceful passing which occurred on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Kingsway Care Centre. Born on December 29, 1936, in Saint John, NB, Joan was the daughter of the late J. Edgar and Pearl (Dodge) Beyea.

Joan graduated from Teacher’s college, but she considered her greatest achievement to be her six children. She was a loving mother and grandmother who doted on her family. Throughout their younger years, she was very involved with their school and extracurricular activities. Whether it was driving to Poley Mountain for multiple ski trips on the weekend, to music, dance lessons, skating lessons, horse show, or after school activities, she was there. The family home was a warm and welcoming home, where family suppers often included friends, neighbours, and other relatives that may have had the good fortune of being there. There was never a dull moment…

She met Elmer and married on September 14, 1979, and new adventures began. They went camping in the Summer in Sussex with their trailer, attended horse shows and off on a few snowmobiling adventures during the Winter.

Later in life, when the grandchildren started to arrive, you could find her enthusiastically sewing some new outfits, knitting matching jacket/pant outfits, and knitting miles of special blankets for them. Soon after, she discovered her love of quilting. Elmer made a large quilting frame for her and she created beautiful quilts for all her children and other family members over the years, that will be cherished forever.

Joan was a member of the Kennebecasis Valley Quilting Guild and attended the Fall shows each year, where she displayed and sold her beautiful quilts and other quilted items. She was also a member of the Hammond River Anglican Association, and former member of Kings County Historical & Archival Society Inc.

Joan had a love of music and encouraged her children and grandchildren to learn to play an instrument, as she loved and played the piano herself. She was a member of the Hammond River Anglican Church, where she also joined the church choir and enjoyed much fellowship with other members.

She enjoyed History and Geography and could often be found teaching the grandchildren all about the World on a map or globe on their frequent visits.

In her earlier years, she enjoyed travelling, especially out West to visit her children and grandchildren, who resided there. She loved all the road trips and adventures they went on.

Joan enjoyed her vegetable garden, her many flower beds and her secret fiddlehead patch. She enjoyed a good cribbage game, 45’s Crokinole, or Crazy 8’s.

Fall was her favourite Season, as she loved going for drives to see all the changing colours of the leaves. Joan will be remembered as a strong, kind, and gracious woman, who was selfless and generous. She will be sadly missed, always remember, and loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer Scribner; six children: Kevin (Bonnie), twin daughters Susan (Robert) and Cynthia (Graham); Krista (Randy), Jill and Robyn (Ron); grandchildren: Ryan, Ashley, Megan, Braden, Drea, Brittany, Stephanie, Colin, Angelus, Kayleigh, Connor, Alisyn and Noah; great grandchildren: Jaxton, Kade, Easton, Oliver, Thane, Adaelia, Anson, Lincoln; sister Ruth Fraser; two step-daughters Twilah and Elaine; step-granddaughers Erica and Tara; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her grandson Gregory Halpin; brother John E. Beyea; sister-in-law, Patricia Beyea; and her brother-in-law Gordon Fraser.

The family would like to thank her caregivers, friends, and family, that have helped in her care during these las few years and the visits that kept her going. Special love and hugs to Krista, Robyn, and Kevin for their immeasurable dedication, love, and support, and were always there when needed. All that love did not go unnoticed.

Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd. Quispamsis, NB, (849-2119), with a celebration of Joan’s life on Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 12- 3 PM. A private family graveside service will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Hammond River. For those who wish donations made in memory of Joan can be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.
