Obituary of Dr. Lawrence Gerard MacDonald
It is with great sorrow that the family of Dr. Lawrence “Lornie” Gerard MacDonald, husband of Jean (Liebke) MacDonald, announce his passing on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at his residence.
Born on March 24, 1956, in Cape Breton, NS, he was a son of the late Lawrence Vincent and “Kathleen” Catherine MacDonald. Lornie was a teacher at Kennebecasis Valley, Hampton and Rothesay High School for 42 years until his retirement in 2022. In his early years at Rothesay High, he completed his PhD at Dalhousie University, one of his many academic accomplishments. During his days of teaching, Lornie would take many school trips with his students all around the world. He was a highly respected teacher, with a dedication to human rights and touched the lives of many throughout the years.
Lornie enjoyed hunting, fishing, coaching hockey and being a proud Cape Bretoner. He had a passion for home renovations and woodworking, making most of the furnishings in his home. Friends were very important to him. Through his swimming, woodworking, hunting trips and teaching, many bonds were made,
and lifelong friendships were formed.
Besides his loving wife, Lornie is survived by his sons; Kyle, Shannon (Kait), Riley (Mary Kate), and Colin (Reghan), brothers; Frank, Alvin (Raylene), and Brian (Jennifer), sisters; Kate Martin (Tom), Carol DeYoung (Jimmy), Sharon Morash (Kenny), Pauline MacDonald, Carmel MacDonald, and Brenda Murray (Bill), sister in laws; Carolyn Oram (Doug), and Mary Thompson (Gordie), twenty six nieces, and nephews, his furry companions, Mugsy, and Lupin, as well as extended family and friends. He was a wonderful father, husband, friend, always putting others before himself. In his words, he would wish everyone a pleasant and positive day.
