Obituary of Wayne Doherty
Beverley, Elizabeth, William Doherty and Vaughn are saddened to announce the death of their husband, father, grandfather and friend, on Sunday August 6, 2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, from complications related to Parkinson’s Disease.
In addition to his immediate family, Wayne is survived by his brother, Brian Doherty and his partner, Frank De Lorey; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and David Nutbrown; his best friend of fifty-eight years, Walter Taylor; and nephews, David and Doug Boyle.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Ella and Leaman Doherty; in-laws, Laura and Hibbert Stuart; sister-in-law, Lynn Boyle; and by several beloved dogs.
Shortly before his passing, Wayne shared with us that he believed he was always a kind, caring person and a gentleman.
Nephew, Doug Boyle shared that his Uncle was the person who taught him how to fish, how to tie his shoe laces, how to drink from a pop bottle and believe it or not, how to be quiet.
Wayne was a graduate of Sackville High School, Moncton Technical School (NBCC) and the University of New Brunswick. He began his career as an instructor at NBCC Saint John and then he taught at Hampton Junior High School and Hampton High School. During his tenure at Hampton Junior High School, each morning he stood on the stairs outside his classroom and would personally to greet all of the students who were going up and down the stairs, hoping to give them a good start to their day. Wayne chaperoned most school dances and coffee nights, assisted in set construction for theatre productions and organized school canoe trips. He cared deeply for his students but hated all the administrative paperwork that came with the job. He retired from teaching at Hampton High School in 2009.
Wayne led a big life. He loved to fish, sail, ski and camp. His friends and family were extremely important to him. Although he coped well with Parkinson’s Disease, he missed the simple everyday social interactions he had while doing something as benign as grocery shopping. He met many friends at the Fight Back Program at KV Boxing, where he helped many others fighting Parkinson’s.

A gathering of friends and family to occur at Hampton Seniors Resource Centre,31 Demille Ct, Hampton, on Sunday, September 10, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.
