Obituary of Alice Kathleen Belyea

With an appreciation of a life well lived, the family of Alice Kathleen “Kay” Belyea announce her passing on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Embassy Hall, Quispamsis, unexpectedly, at her 100th birthday party. She shared special moments and hugs with all, and went on peacefully to her heavenly home. Kay was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, Arthur “Art” Belyea, in 1990.

Born Kay Sherwood on December 23, 1923, in Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Annie (Snelling) Sherwood. She was a proud representative of the Sherwood family her entire life. Besides her husband and parents, Kay was predeceased by her sisters; Merien Cosman, Constance Beck, and Mildred Belyea, brothers; Gerald, Otty, Stuart, and Paul Sherwood, and granddaughter Jessica Black.

Kay was a member of Central Baptist Church and later Kingston Baptist Church. She moved to Kingston, NB, on her 80th birthday, into a new home she designed and had built.

In the 1950s, Kay was employed with Birks Jewelers on King Square in Saint John. She often spoke fondly of that job. The family treasures the Birks china and silverware she safeguarded all these years. From 1969 until 1993 she owned and operated Kay’s Day Care, on Orange St. Saint John. She cared for many children and ran a successful business until retirement at age 70.

Kay loved the outdoors, and taking in the beautiful scenery. She enjoyed swimming and fishing trout, especially. She loved her children, grandchildren, siblings, and entire family. She spent many hours relating stories of the wonderful times, and the tough times, her family went through over many decades.

Kay is survived by her sons; Stephen (Gwen) of Beaver Harbour, Tim (Shelley) of Long Reach, sister Janet Todd of Moncton, grandchildren; Adrienne (Kyle), Mariah, Alec (Jessica), Mitchell, and Madisyn, great grandson Noah Black, special niece and nephew; Merien Wimmer (Gus, deceased), of Alberta, and Brice Belyea (Cathy) of Rothesay, as  well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Kay will be missed by all who knew her. She inspired fair-play and determination in those around her.

We wish to thank the staff of Embassy Hall Nursing Home, where mom received excellent care and support for the last 18 months. Her faith was tested several times in recent years, and never wavered.

On March 31, 2024, Kay lost her loving sister Thelma Fiebig, who resided in Ontario.

A graveside service for Kay and Thelma will be held at Ocean View Memorial Gardens on Satruday, May 11, 2024, at 10:30AM. A gathering for friends and family will take place following the graveside service at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506-849-2119)  from 11:30 until 1:30 PM. For those who wish, donations in memory of Kay can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
