Obituary of Joyce Madeline Loughery
Born on October 26th, 1930, in St. Martins, New Brunswick Joyce Madeline (Black) Loughery was the daughter of the late James H Black and Bessie Mae (Daly).
Doug and Joyce married in a snowstorm on January 30th, 1954, and they created homes in St. Martins, Saint John, Quispamsis and Gondola Point. After raising five children, they returned to St. Martins in 2000, where she and Doug enjoyed their “million-dollar view” of the bay from their home on Mosher Hill.
One of her earliest jobs was to enter the one room schoolhouse before the teacher and other students, in winter she would clear the front steps and start the fire. That was indicative of the care that she would show to others throughout her long life.
Joyce had many talents and besides focusing on caring and raising her family she had a strong faith and was active in the United Church, the UCW, Presbytery. Mom was recognized for her contributions to the Saint John Clothing Depot where her and Dad served their community for many years in one of many volunteer and leadership roles. She played the organ at home and in the church, enjoyed lending her voice to choirs and inspired her grandchildren to pursue music.
She was not what you would call “well travelled” and her fear of heights may have played a role in her reluctance to hop on a plane. Doug and Joyce travelled to the Boston area early in their marriage and later enjoyed time camping around the Maritimes and especially in Perry Maine at Sunrise Shores. She was a master at corralling the kids and having everything packed so when Doug got off work at the mill, it would be only minutes until the family were all piled in the car and headed for the trailer.
She was very seldom separated from her husband or kids; so a major outing for her that she fondly spoke of was to spend a few days with her girlfriend Olga Prior at a presbytery meeting at Mount Allison University in Sackville.
Joyce and Doug, saw out there final days at Ridgewood and Kings Way Care Centre; celebrated 69 years of marriage on Jan 30th of 2023 and had been inspirational to the other residents with the affection they showed for one another and the positive attitude that they maintained. Joyce left this life peacefully on July 23, 2024, Joyce’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the staff, residents and volunteers, for your kindness, compassion and friendship shown to Joyce. This will never be forgotten.
Joyce is survived by daughter Cathy (Wayne) Love; her sons, Bruce (Marsha) and Richard (Catherine) Loughery; grandchildren: Kristen Loughery, Michael (Alix) Loughery, Erin (Evan)Loughery, Katie (Evan) Arsenault, Jennie Loughery, Charlotte Loughery, Simon (Tori) Loughery, Adam (Kaysie)Bouchard, Robbie Loughery and Rachel Loughery; great-grandchildren: Nathan Morrell, Makayla Morrell, Lexi Loughery, Liam Loughery and Lincoln Loughery; Ella and Madilyn Arsenault, Shayne and Gage Bouchard as well as several nieces and nephews.
