Obituary of Joanna Mary Downey

Joanna Downey, wife of the late Milton Roland Downey, passed away gracefully, surrounded by her loving family, on May 2, 2013, at Kings Way Care Centre. Born on January 13, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Archibald and Hazel (Gray) Jost. Joanna attended Mount Allison University, and following her time there, married her husband Milton, and they spent 53 years together. She was a member of the VON Board for many years, a life member of the UCW, a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, a founding member of the Treble Clef Ladies Choir, and was a member of several church choirs. An avid golfer, Joanna was a member of Riverside, Hampton and Imperial Lakes (Florida) golf clubs, where you could observe her unique golf swing. She also was an avid supporter and fan of horses and harness racing, enjoyed travelling worldwide, wintering in Florida, and her large family; hosting large Sunday gatherings every week. Simply put, she spent a lifetime taking care of her family; they were her life. Joanna is survived by her children; Joyce Reid (Gordon), Ruth Buckley (Richard), Archie Downey (Connie), Stephen Downey (Patty), Bob Downey (Anne), grandchildren Andrew Reid (Sheila), Jeff Reid (Susan), Melanie Titus (Mike), Philip Reid (Bonnie), Jann Schmidt (Paul), James Buckley (Debbie), Stephen Buckley (Charlene), Joanna Buckley-Morrison (Mike), Rhonda Kelley, Christopher Downey, Sarah Adams (Peter), Shawn Downey (Jennifer), Stephanie Downey (Jason McLean), eighteen surviving great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sisters, Eleanor Daly (Charlie), and Reloy McCann (the late Robert), brother Norman Jost (Beth), as well as sisters-in-law Norma Tufts (Clyde Downey) and Doreen Barnett (Gerald). In addition to her husband Milton, and her parents Hazel and Archibald, Joanna was pre-deceased by her brother Roland, and one great-grandchild. The family wishes to thank both Joanna's at-home caregivers, as well as the staff of Kings Way Care Centre for their exceptional care. Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (849-2119), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from Quispamsis United Church, 372 Hampton Road, on Saturday, May 4, at 11:00 am. A private family interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
