Obituary of Donald Eugene Hickey
The passing of Don Hickey of Quispamsis, loving husband of Barbara (Gordon) Hickey occurred at the Kingsway Care Centre on January 28th, 2015.
Born on March 21st, 1934 in Saint John NB, Don was the son of the late Eugene and Edith (McLeod) Hickey.
Don is survived by his sisters Kathleen Hickey, Diane Brown and his brother-in-law Mark Gordon (Carol).
Don was predeceased by his sisters Ellen Petrites and Jessie Stone Canty.
Don attended Simonds High School and was active in many sports as well as Simonds 527 Air Cadet Squadron. He joined the RCAF where he was a physical education specialist. At the age of 27, Don was appointed as the Director of Recreation at the Saint John CYO on Cliff Street. He led many recreational pursuits in Saint John over the years as an instructor for the YMCA including football, swimming & hockey among others.
Don and Barb met and married in Ontario where Don taught special needs students for 30 years. Don was an avid nature photographer as well as a woodworker. After retiring from teaching, Don taught photography classes at the NB Community College. He and Barb also cherished Labrador Retriever dogs over the years. The last gift Don gave to Barb was a yellow Lab puppy named Amber who has given strength to Barb during this difficult time.
Respecting Don’s wishes, a private memorial was held. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (849-2119). Donations in memory of Don can be made to the Curly Adams Fund for animal rehabilitation at the Fairvale Animal Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
Special thanks to Dr. Patrick Sullivan, The Sussex Health Care Centre & Kingsway Care Centre. Your brilliant care, compassion & kindness were of great comfort to Don & Barb throughout his illness.
