Years ago when Karen and I worked together at NBTel we started a lovely friendship. One highlight of our friendship was travelling through England, Wales and Scotland with our BritRail pass and backpacks in 1974! Great memories! My heart is with Pieter and her beautiful daughters and grandchildren as they mourn the loss of a very lovely wife, mother and grandmother.

Ken it has been way too many years. How well remember your house on Duke Street. Ran into Karen occasionally over the years and always said to say "hi" to you. Take care my friend. Sad to read of Karen's passing. Reading of loss like this makes us remember those true friends we had so many years ago and somehow life allowed the roads to go in different directions. God bless you and yours Ken.

Pieter, Matina, Kenda, and Petra, how lucky I was to call Karen my friend. We met at UNBSJ and it was like we had known each other forever. I learned so much from Karen, especially about living in the present and not to worry so much about things beyond my control. Such a kind and loving soul, Karen looked out for all those she called friends. She loved her family unconditionally and was so proud of you girls and her beautiful grandchildren. Pieter, you were the love of her life and you brought her such joy. I'm thinking and praying for you and your beautiful family.

Dear Pieter, Matina, Kenda, Petra, husbands and grand children,
(my apologies in advance for any badly written english)
I went to Canada (1986) when I was 18 years old, a little nervous because I only saw my uncle Pieter and my aunt Karen about once a year. But I soon found out, it was nonsence to be nervous. Karen had a warm and welcome heart and household. She made me feel so welcome. We laughed and talked a lot. We went for a volunteer job at the hospital of Saint John and when I went back to Holland again, Karen continued voluntering in the hospital. We learned Petra how to ride a bike and Pieter how to type with ten fingers. And I learned Karen how to fold socks ;-). I also remember the tension, because there was a very big fire in the neighbourhood and Pieter had long shifts, Karen was so worried. We went to Brenda and Kenny in New Foundland, wich she loved and missed so much and she wanted me to meet them. Karen took me to her neigbours, her quilt group and let me meet a various number of people and I always noticed that Karen was a welcome guest in another, s house. I created so many warm memories in those weeks, specially due to Karen, with the family Kalverboer and the people around them, I am grateful got to know my Canadian family in this special way. It's a great loss and I will always remember Karen with warm feelings.
Love from Holland - Marijke

Karen was the most positive person I have had the pleasure to know. Even in the face of cancer, she always had a smile and was always thinking of how she could help someone else.
She will be greatly missed by our quilting community, the Kennebecasis Valley Quilting Guild, and especially John’s Girls.
Deepest condolences to all the family, most especially Pieter and his girls! Matina, Pedra, and Kenda.. She will always be with you in spirit!

We were so sorry to read of Karen’s passing. I was fortunate enough to have met and worked with Karen at NBTel and have great memories of that time. Conversations were fun and easy when we would occasionally bump into each other in the community even when months had passed between meetings, I will always remember her love of laughter. She was so proud of her family and we extend our deepest condolences to you, the girls and their families.

Pieter, Matina, Kenda, Petra and all the children: There are no words to express our sorrow at this time, but you know that our love and prayers have been, and are, with you all. We shared a family with Karen. At times we split babysitting duties for those precious grandchildren, a good team.. Christmas and Easter get-togethers were always lively and fun.. Karen always found something to laugh heartily about.. We will miss her. Love Patti and Bruce

Dear Pieter, Matina, Kenda, Petra and family,
Sending you all my deepest condolences. I first met Karen in 1990 when we moved to Holy Trinity. In all our years at various churches across the province, I can honestly say that I've never met a more genuine, kind and caring person. Both Karen and Pieter were so welcoming upon our arrival and continued to support our family through the years. For this, I am forever grateful. Karen was a beautiful person who will be missed by all who knew her. Sending everyone my love and prayers.
