Obituary of Matthew Tyler McInnis

It is with broken hearts that the family of Matthew McInnis announces his passing on Friday, January 19, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Matt was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on March 15, 1997, the son of Kim McKinley-Black and Curtis McInnis. Growing up in Oromocto (the town with four O’s, as Matthew would often call it) and attended school there until grade 9, when he left for RNS. Following RNS he attended Rothesay High School where he graduated in the class of 2015.

Those who knew Matthew will know how much he loved hockey growing up. He had a deep passion for the sport and enjoyed watching his favourite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matthew’s hockey started proudly with the UNB V-reds where his talents were developed by George Wood. He then entered the minor hockey system where he played Peewee AAA IN Fredericton. Following the two years in Peewee AAA he enrolled at RNS where he travelled Canada and the US playing his favourite sport. During this time, he represented his province playing for the U14 and U15 select teams. Following this he proudly fulfilled his childhood dream of playing Major Midget AAA for the Saint John Vito’s for 2 seasons. He was then selected in the second round of the MHL junior hockey league and continued his career with the Saint Stephen Aces and Miramachi Timberwolf’s while being an affiliate with the QMJHL for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. All through his hockey career he had the opportunity to play with many close friends and made many lifelong cherished friendships.

After Matt hung up his skates, he started his journey into the workforce and enjoyed multiple different jobs making wonderful new friendships. Matthew also found a love for a new sport, Boxing.

Matthew had a kind heart and loved animals, especially his German Shepherd, Baron, who was his companion that he always called, “My Boy”.

He is survived by his parents, Kim (Jamie McKinley) McKinley-Black and Curtis McInnis; his brother, Brayden McInnis; grandparents Ralph and Beanne Black, grandmother, Gerry McInnis; aunts, Kristal (Jason) Kindred, Julie (Brent) Magee and Lee (John) Dubeau; cousins: Josh, Brett, Asha, Sophie, Clair and Eliot; his childhood best-friend, Tristan Meadows; as well as several hockey teammates and friends. He was predeceased by his grandfather, John McInnis.
