Obituary of Charles Murray Gilchrist
It is with an appreciation of a life well lived, the death of Charles Murray Gilchrist of Quispamsis, husband of the late Phyllis (Morrisey) Gilchrist, occurred on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Born on August 20, 1929, in Springfield, NB, he was a son of the late Charles and Eva (Brown) Gilchrist. Murray was employed for over 44 years at Dominion Stores in the Meat Department until his retirement. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in his earlier years and later a member of Rothesay Baptist Church (now True Life Church). He and Phyllis enjoyed many years in Florida, where they spent their winters. Murray always enjoyed his church families over the many years. He was a member of True Life Church. Murray had a mission to raise funds for the Saint John Regional Hospital Cardiac Rehab. Over the years, he raised over $120 000 in donations and was honoured to have the Staff Room in Clinic 1 named after him and in memory of Phyllis.
Murray is survived by his dear friends, Joyce and Dale Shaw, and several other very close friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Besides his wife Phyllis of 66 years, Murray is predeceased by his son Ronald, and brother Gordon.
Murray will always be loved and remembered by his friends at the Saint John Regional Hospital for his unbelievable 18-year commitment to improving the lives of cardiac survivors. Since 2003 sponsors from all over the Saint John area have made Cardiac Walk of Life pledges so that Murray could continue to advance his mission for cardiac rehab in the Saint John area. Even at the age of 94, Murray remained devoted to his cause. Through Murray’s endeavor, the NB Heart Centre’s Cardiac Rehab program has seen many lives changed for the better. Murray Gilchrist has been an inspiration to us all and his kindness and generosity will never be forgotten.
